To Gym or Not to Gym

So I don't have gym membership.  I'm not going to get a gym membership.  At least not right now.  I'm not against getting one.  I have had a gym membership in the past.  We live really close to our local community center, which has a new facility.  I could get one, but I am not.  Here's why:

1. I don't want to.

2. I don't want to spend the money.  (I haven't mentioned that I am a total cheapskate.  My family has been working a plan to pay off all of our debt.  The gym membership isn't in the plan right now.)

3. There are fitness things I can do right now that would work for me--that I would do.  My list: walking videos, exercise videos from the library, borrowed videos from a friend, lifting hand weights (have the weights, will use books from library), using my step while watching TV (I'm getting a hold of the first two seasons of Lost--never watched the series.  This is going to be my activity while stepping).

4. I'm going to do the #3 activities for a while--get me started.  It's winter up in the great White North, but once it thaws, I'm going to move it outside--that will be a nice change of pace.

5. This will give me time to save up and work the gym membership into my budget.  Maybe by next fall or winter, I might change my mind.  Maybe the gym next year will be a good way to change things up.

Works for me, the sensible me that I am.  So am I a sissy?  Are you saying to yourself -- "If you were really committed, you would suck it up and go to the gym.  You would spend the money and make the commitment."

I don't think so.  I'm not going to the gym.  So it's Project E Word at home for now.  (If you haven't figured it out that's my code phrase for exercise right now--I just hate that word).

  1. I don't think you are a sissy at all; I think you have a great plan. I spend an exorbitant amount of money on my gym each month...but I love it and to me it is worth it. I like to run outside in spring/summer/fall but otherwise you will always find me in the gym!

You have to find what works for you...as I said you have a great plan!

  2. I think everyone has to exercise where and when they see fit. If you don't want to join a gym and do so anyways... you probably won't go. For me personally, I take classes at my local community center and work much harder there than I would alone. And it is way cheaper than most typical gyms.

  3. I DO NOT think you are a sissy. If you aren't able to do it financially or aren't ready, then that's a great realization.

You CAN do a lot of it at home. One DVD I really like is Jillian Michael's 30 Day shred. That's a good one and all you need is a mat and hand weights. Just take baby steps and when you can do the gym, do it.

The fact that you've thought things through and made a comment to exercise at home is GREAT so don't sell yourself short. That's a big commitment in itself. :)
